Rules and Procedures

Students, faculty and staff use the Library in a number of ways. The Library contains ten tables for reading, writing and working on projects as well as the computers, the copier and the TV/VCR. Because of its central location, the Library is often a meeting place for students. Please always remember that the Library is a quiet study area for use by all students and faculty. Respect others using the Library and take care of Library materials and equipment.

General
  • You are expected to be quiet.
  • Do NOT re-shelve books. When you remove a book from the shelf, please place it on the nearest book cart or place on a table when you are finished with it. If you are going to check it out, bring it to the Circulation Desk.
  • NO CUTTING on the tables. You must use a cutting board when working on projects in the Library.
  • No Spray Mount is allowed in the Library.
  • You are expected to clean up after yourself when working on projects.
  • No food or drink is allowed. Cell phones must be turned off.
  • Do not leave personal property unattended.
Checking Out Materials

Only current students, faculty and staff of The Art Institute of Charlotte may check out materials from the Library. To check out materials, you need to present your identification card at the Circulation Desk. New students may present a copy of their current official schedule if they have not yet received their ID card.

Books and CD-ROMs may be checked out for 2 weeks and may be renewed once for another 2 weeks. Videos and DVDs may be checked out for 4 days and also may be renewed once for another 4 days. A maximum of 8 items may be checked out at one time. Check out privileges may be suspended if overdue fines or overdue books are on your account.

The Library also contains many items that are available for special checkout periods only or are for use solely in the Library. Library use only items include current periodicals, newspapers, reference materials and materials on reserve. Reserve items are selected by instructors for student use in the Library for class assignments or additional reading. Some reserve items are selected by faculty to be available for 1-hour or for 24-hour checkout. These items are marked with the hourly amount on the spine. Overdue fines for 1-hr. items are $.50/hr. and are $.50/day for 24-hr. items. All reserve materials are kept at the Circulation Desk. Reference materials are in the reference area along the inside wall of the Library.

Return items to the Circulation Desk in the Library when they are due. The fines for regular circulating overdue and lost items are:

  • $.10 per item per day for overdue books, CDs, videos & DVDs
  • $.10 per item per hour for overdue equipment (mat cutters, etc.)
  • Cost plus $5.00 non-refundable processing fee per item for lost materials

Students who withdraw from school will be charged for any items out on their Library account (cost of item + $5.00 non-refundable fee per item). If a student wants to return Library material once he/she has been charged, it is at the discretion of the Library Director to accept the material.

All fines must be paid and all items returned to the Library at the end of each quarter. Quarter schedules and grades, or certificates and diplomas, will not be released if your Library account is not clear at quarter end.

Computers

  • Do not download programs (including Instant Messenger programs), load outside software or alter settings on the computers. Checking and sending personal e-mail is allowed on the computers. However, this is a privilege. Student use for research takes priority.
  • Game playing on the computers is not allowed.
  • All students are expected to follow The Art Institute of Charlotte Technology Use Policy. Failure to follow the policy will result in loss of computer privileges.
